Challenge I-IV Match-Ups
Biology is in Challenge II, so you could do this in Challenge II as you go through Apologia Biology, or you could do it in Challenge I as a preview...which gives them even more time to contemplate the beauty of biology!
Class will focus on one item of interest from the Apologia text and that will inspire a watercolor lesson and art journal page.
You can encourage your student to take more notes from their biology text in their art journal, but that's not required.
This class matches up with the art history in Challenge II.
The artists in Challenge II are included in this class, but the bigger benefit is that they will develop a clear understanding of the rise and decline of Western culture which they'll get a glimpse of in Challenge II by watching Francis Schaeffer's DVDs.
By talking more about each artists' worldview and philosophy, students will get in the habit of evaluating a worldview by whether it is Biblical.
This class is also a good match with the philosophy strand in Challenge III.
Some students do this class when they are in Challenge I, but to get college credit, they'll need to be in "tenth grade."
This class coordinates well with the poetry in Challenge III.
Poems are arranged in chronological order to give students a better understanding of poetry-history.
They will work on advanced photo-realistic drawing.
This class coordinates with Challenge III and Challenge IV.
The theme of this class alternates between Great Books and Around the World so that students can take it for two years in a row.
In Around the World, students learn about non-Western religions and culture which adds to their understanding of Western culture and geography, coordinating with "The Explorers" read in Challenge IV.
Great Books covers books from all Challenge levels: Out of the Silent Planet, Lord of the Rings, Shakespeare, and The Odyssey.
If your student is interested in a major in fine arts or graphic design, this is the perfect chance to learn more about both.
This class coordinates with the theology strand in Challenge IV.
The scriptures are chosen from the books they will be using in Challenge IV: "Invitation to the Psalms" and "Mere Christianity."
Students will take a more personal approach to the texts as they share prayer concerns and contemplate the scriptures as they watercolor them.
Moms, you might enjoy doing this class with your senior to share some special moments before they end their homeschool time with you.
Challenge II Directors and Parents
By request, this class was created for directors who would like to prepare for Challenge II AND do something for themselves: learn to draw and paint! Many directors do this over the summer! Now, when you sign up, we'll send you the Art History Sketchbook for free!
Also good for students who don't have time for the full Art History course. Take the sampler class and just do the 12 in Challenge II. Offered live in the summer and as a self-paced video course any time, this 12-part course is a great prep for Challenge II parents and directors and students who want to try some classes before diving into the full year-long course. It covers the 12 artists in Marvelous to Behold, the text used in Challenge II's Western Cultural History strand.
Challenge II directors or artists, if you're interested in teaching the art in person, there is a class for that! After watching the class videos, you'll have the license to show the videos to a group.
